On this episode of the Riton Podcast, host Brady Speth sits down with Team USA Shotgun shooter, Julia Stallings. Listen to how she began her career and what she’s working on now.
Brady Speth 0:08
Welcome, everybody to the Riton podcast. I have an awesome guest today Julia Stallings, National Championship for shotgun, and we’re gonna dig into this a little deeper as far as the many disciplines. We were kind of talking ahead of time. So right on brand ambassador, welcome, Julia.
Julia Stallings 0:28
Thank you for having me.
Brady Speth 0:29
We’re happy to be here. We kind of we touch on every time we do the podcast as far as our whole goal with this is to just kind of have fun, have conversations with some of the people we know in the industry. And so, so we got you in here today. actually start we’re lucky enough to have you in person. So worked out. Tucson. So why start there, actually. So you’re in Tucson right now?
Julia Stallings 0:53
Yes, I’m in Tucson. We were training us a shooting brought us down for a training camp. Because you know, COVID we haven’t been you know, picking up the guns as we supposed to, you know, get a rust off. I mean, we had a ton of rust. Yeah, we just needed to dust it off and get back on the field kind of get back in that motion. And well, so they brought us to Tucson, it’s warm, instead of Colorado’s Springs, it was like 30 to an average of all the places we could go to and then they were like Tucson and we were like 75 Yes.
Brady Speth 1:23
January, which is awesome.
Julia Stallings 1:25
Absolute came here to train, get some shooting. I’m so sore. So it’s great. But got a bunch of shooting and we were supposed to go to Morocco. And that got canceled recently. But Egypt is still in the book. So that’s hopefully headed to Egypt in February.
Brady Speth 1:41
Yeah, a couple more weeks to shake off the rust.
Julia Stallings 1:44
you know, stretch it out, you know, move to the gun a little bit more, hopefully get back into the groove.
Brady Speth 1:48
Good. No, that’s awesome. So yeah, we’re lucky enough to have you here in studio. Um, let’s kind of everybody wants to get introduced to you a little bit. So start from the beginning. Obviously, we were talking a little bit before the show. It didn’t start with shotgun shooting. So now it talked about kind of growing up and how you got into this and go from there.
Julia Stallings 2:07
Yeah. So I actually, you know, I didn’t start shooting, I actually water skied. I started waterskiing about four years old, and my dad was a water skier and we moved to Memphis, he put us on a lake and he was like, hey, do you want to learn how to ski and so we trained, I mean, throughout the entire year, he would fly us to Florida. And we would train in Florida in the winter and then train in the summer, obviously in Memphis, right. And so we train, train, train, and then I got a college scholarship to Alabama, literally full ride. All they had to say was Hey, ride the boat, go to a couple tournaments here and there post a good score call today. Yeah. Best scholarship ever had to say, you know, I mean, what college wouldn’t want to ride in a boat, right? So they’re like, Hey, you should come. I was like, absolutely. Well, I shot a shotgun on a team. Before that, like I went to high school, all girls school. And when I moved, I transferred, so they were like, Oh, we got this redneck girl from the country come to this all girl school. She must be great with a gun and they started this quote unquote, trap program. Had no idea. I love it. I think just started. I had no idea about it. I was like, I don’t shoot guns. I’m water skier. Like, no. So you’re like, you should come out and my dad was like, yeah, we can shoot a gun. Why not? Take it in the backyard. So I’m in theology class, literally my teachers like, Hey, we’re setting you up, be there Saturday morning. And I was like, Okay, perfect. New Girl. I was like, What am I supposed to say? Right? So we go, I fell in love with it. And then I did it as like a side sport. Okay, so I didn’t really like pick up the gun that much. I shot a little bit, you know, loved it always about competition. Right? Right. So like to win. And so it was like, Okay, that was fun. And then take the scholarship to Alabama. Roll Tide. So had to go. There went waterskiing. And I’m sitting in biology class, and I’m like, Yeah, I have pictures of you know, my laptop with my girlfriends. We’re all holding guns, you know? Yeah. Looking pretty cool. And the guy next to me goes, whoa, who’s your friends? And I’m like, Smooth Move. Right here. Like, go. And he’s like, you shoot guns. I was like, Yeah, I mean, no big deal, right? Sure. Sure. And he’s like, so do your friends shoot guns. I was like, Okay, I see where they go. Yeah, exactly. He’s like, would you want to come shooting on Saturday? Again, a Saturday, obviously, that’d be a Saturday. And so I was like, why not? Can I borrow gun? So I go and they have this team. And they’re like, Hey, you should try out for this club team. And I was like, No, no, I don’t think I want to. I’m like shoot. I’m like not shooting material and waterskiing, i’ve been out of the shooting game. Yeah, I was like, I got a full ride to go sit in the boat. Don’t give that up.
Brady Speth 4:53
Yeah, don’t ruin this.
Julia Stallings 4:55
And so I’m like, Okay, I’ll go Saturday. See how it goes. It was so fun. I was like, Oh my goodness, I’ve missed this so much. Like this is just awesome. So I started going every Saturday with these guys and I ended up meeting meeting a boy you know how that goes. how it starts, you know, I’m I met a boy and they were like, he was like, I’m gonna train you how to be traps, traps shooter skeet shooter sporting clays shooter, you have the talent, let’s do it. And I was like, I don’t know. I was kind of like nervous and he was a good shooter. And yeah, I fell in love with shooting and he’s like, you should go to Nationals. So I got the courage to go to Nationals go to nationals and get an offer from another school. And they were like a decision needs to be made. Yeah, I’m coming home. I’m like, Dad, I got this offer to go shoot guns at a school full ride. And he’s like, Julia, don’t you dare you’re Alabama. You’re at Alabama. And this is like a school in St. Louis, small liberal arts school. Like it’s tiny. But it was like, the Alabama School of shooting like, okay, like, I’ll be on football team, school shooting. So I mean, they’ve won 15 national championships straight. And it’s like, Hey, you got the offer? Yeah. And I was like, Oh, boy. I was like, we should at least go see it. And so, of course, my dad’s like, fine, we’ll go see it. You know? Like, let’s do it. So we drive all the way up to Missouri one weekend, and when I like stepped foot there, I was like, I belong here. I was like, Dad, I gotta sign the papers. He’s like, don’t do it. He was like, Are you sure? You sure this is what you want to do. I was like, shooting, skiing, shooting, skiing. And he was like, Oh, my goodness. So I literally signed the papers that weekend and moved that next semester. I was like, in love with it. Yeah, I was like, I’m gonna shoot. That’s it. I’m gonna just give up waterskiing. Go shoot, and now I still waterski.
Brady Speth 7:00
You’re still okay at it.
Julia Stallings 7:01
Yeah, okay. I mean, my brother waterski. So it’s a family thing.
Brady Speth 7:05
Okay. So your dad still has somebody for his past time?
Julia Stallings 7:08
Yeah, yeah. He still gets a boat every year. Like he occasionally right. But yeah, sign the papers. I ended up you know, dumping the guy and taking the gun more.
Brady Speth 7:17
I was gonna, I was debating on asking about the boy. Yeah. bring that up.
Julia Stallings 7:24
Yeah, I fell in love with the gun a lot more than the boy but I was like, thank you for teaching me how to do it, but fell in love with that gun. And so I went on to school and one of our coaches, he was an Olympian. Okay. So he was like, Julia, you should try out for like, go towards the Olympic team with this stuff. And I was like, no way. I’ve only been shooting like three years. Like, no, no way jose should not do this. And he’s like, just do it as a bet for me. So I go to Texas on a bet. Go to Texas on this bet. He’s like, I’ll pay for everything. If you place you’ll get reimbursed and I was like, oh, money accepted. Like, why not? I have missed school get to shoot. Everything’s taken care of. Heck, yeah. Okay, so I’m going I make the finals for this tournament. I’ve kid you not shot bunker for probably like, two months before this. That’s a max. Yeah. Like, no coaching. No, nothing kind of just winging it. And I make this final. And I’m over here like with all these girls who have gone overseas, and like, I mean, dedicated their lives. And I’m over here like, Oh, crap. Like, I don’t even know what’s going on. And so like deer in the headlights, they’re like, oh, congratulations, you got to go shoot this final one. I was like, Oh, no, yeah, ended up coming out and forth, which was like, phenomenal, right? In the final. And I don’t even remember that whole tournament. But it was amazing. Ever since then, totally hooked. Like I was like, I gotta do this now. Like, so. I trained really hard and made the USA team that next following year, and they put me on the traveling team. My first World Cup was to Mexico. So I really wanted to go overseas, but I got Mexico instead. We later on got Korea and other some other ones. But yeah, nice guy was awesome.
Brady Speth 9:18
Hopefully travel start kicking back up then here soon
Julia Stallings 9:21
I hope so. Because I’ve always wanted to go to Egypt. And I’ve been dreaming of that. And they say you just shoot into the pyramids. And I’m like, how cool a range is that.
Brady Speth 9:30
looking at the pyramids. That’s hard to beat.
Julia Stallings 9:33
yeah, we gotta go. So yeah, that’s kind of where I’m at now, but
Brady Speth 9:37
let me kind of go back. Obviously, that’s insane for the short amount of time. So congrats, the hard work that goes into that. That’s awesome. So um, terminology a little bit I kind of everybody you can help us out here. Okay.
Julia Stallings 9:49
Yes. Break it down.
Brady Speth 9:50
Yeah. So bunker trap skeet sporting clays. Yes. Everybody kind of thinks they know what those are. Yep. Okay. from somebody who actually knows
Julia Stallings 9:58
Okay, break you down. So shooting has disciplines kind of like in other sports like swimming. There’s different disciplines. Right, right. So trap there’s usually a box in the middle of this field right and the in the targets like clays go outwards. Right? Right. Super simple. You got five stations go around five stations shoot the targets going that way.
Brady Speth 10:19
first job ever was pulling trap before automated systems that there was a button the guy yells pull you hit the button. Literally one of my first jobs. Yeah. Good money there. Yeah, but not fun to sit there. Watch other people’s shoot all day. Yeah, yeah. It gets bored after a while. So it’s absolutely okay. So trap
Julia Stallings 10:40
and it ranges about 35 miles an hour. Right. Okay, skeet. Let’s go to skeet skeet. You got a high house in the low house. Right. Two Towers. And then you got stations all around kind of like a half moon. Targets go across from you like this way. Yeah. You know, right and left.
Brady Speth 10:54
Yeah. So traps going away.
Julia Stallings 10:56
Yep. And you don’t even know where traps going. So you kind of rotates to oscillate ski. You know where they’re going, but it’s just right and left and you got singles and pairs, right? super simple. Right? Then you got five stand. five stand, like the shortened version of sporting clays, okay. So to make it really like fun, they take five stations and they have all these different traps out in the field. And they can be like, different fun targets. Whether you have like targets going all the way like all the way across the field. You can have 40 yards back. You can have them right in front of your face. You can have rabbits super fun instead of walking around, you know, kind of like golf. Right? Well shooting. It’s right there. Yeah, sporting clays is kind of like office shooting right? different stations, you go to the different ones. They have different things you shoot. Great. Yeah. And I always like to do like business work be like, hey, you want to go shoot sporting clays and kind of like golf with shotguns. Network? Right? Um, but yeah, those are the different terms for American events. Right now. You got International. And these are the ones that they don’t have. They only have these overseas. They don’t usually have them very, very much here, unfortunately. Because we have the American Games. Well, international, you’ll find all the time overseas. It’s kind of like their football like Italy. It’s like their football, right. So they’re in like every single town. First one is bunker trap. So it’s like elevated American trap. You got 15 machines, it’s kind of like an underground baseball dugout field, right? So it’s really flat. You got 50 machines across, and you have different angles, like they’re super fast angle. So American goes around 30. I mean, bunker can range anywhere from 60 to 70, depending on where you’re at. And the altitude. Yeah. Because they have to meet a certain distance. Okay. Yep. So meters. So it’s great, like 70 meters have to go a certain distance, depending on the angle so that they set different schemes. So it’s really fun. You still got five stations, you rotate every five. skeet. skeet is where it gets tricky. You still got the high and low house course. National ski international ski. Yep. International skis. Pretty cool. So you got high and low house, right? The difference is you have to start lowgun. Okay, so you start lowgun, and you have a mark on your vest where it has to be, you get that confirmed when you first go to tournaments. And when you call pull, there’s also a delay. So not only are the targets going a lot faster, you get a delay, throw it in there. So you can call like, it can be like three seconds and there’s like a little light. So light comes on when you call pull target may or may not throw. You got three, three seconds, sometimes zero seconds. It just depends. It varies. And then the target will take off. So a little bit tricky. reactive. Yeah. It’s always fun to have those games, especially those games just because it adds everything yeah. opens the door for everything.
Brady Speth 13:42
Nice. So, so I hope everybody tracked with that. We’ll find out later, post your questions. Try to answer back and answer those. Um, what’s your favorite then?
Julia Stallings 13:53
Oh, okay. So bunker is probably the most challenging for me. So I mean, I have a special place in my heart for bunker obviously. But if I had to choose when to do all the time, it told me sporting clays, it represents a lot of like outdoor shooting and stuff like you have targets on the ground you you’d never know what you’re gonna get. And it’s just so fun. You get to drive a golf cart. I
Brady Speth 14:15
mean, yeah. It’s more kind of reminiscent of honey like rabbit hunting or bird hunting. Yeah,
Julia Stallings 14:20
yeah. You’re in the woods. Yeah, it’s super fun. So I mean, if I choose one, sporting clays me to like actually compete in one bunker? Yeah.
Brady Speth 14:31
Yeah. So how does it work? kind of walk us through? Like when you make a team? Is it in one of those disciplines? Do you have to pick? Or is it you kind of compete in all of them? And then kind of say, how does it How does make it like a national team or an Olympic team or something?
Julia Stallings 14:45
Okay, um, so making a national team, let’s just say a national team or a traveling team. Yeah. So we have these things called selection matches. There’s three of them here, well, two of them a year and then you have one national. So there’s three big tournaments a year. You have a spring selection and a fall selection. And during the selection matches, you have like a week of shooting okay? For each discipline so you can either do skeet or you can do bunker you can do both, but not many people do both be running usually Yeah, usually doing one or the other because I mean, it’s a lot of shooting for just a week. Yeah. So let’s just go with bunker, you’re gonna shoot a week a bunker, you’re gonna have all the scores, you want the highest score, you’re gonna make the finals, top six, make finals, right? And if it’s like a competition, we’re traveling on the line. And it’s those three people who place like 1,2,3 would be the people who are the travel team for that year, or for ever how many tournaments are going to have like, so let’s just say they have three tournaments, you’re going to like, let’s say, Korea, Italy, and like Mexico, okay. And those three people have that opportunity to go. Now we have these MQF spots. These spots allow you to like take, you know, a wild card, kind of, they’re not competing for a medal, but they’re still getting that overseas experience. So when I first started, they put me in that spot because of the newbie. Yeah, they’re like, she doesn’t even know what she’s doing. But we need to send her so so it was a great opportunity to like go because like, Oh, I still get this overseas experience. I’m shooting with the big dogs, but not everything. Sure. Yeah. Everything’s not on me. Right.
Brady Speth 16:16
Expected to the top three or something like that. Like Good.
Julia Stallings 16:18
Good team. Yeah. Go team. Shoot. Good. I’m doing my thing over here. Don’t mind me.
Brady Speth 16:23
Yeah. That’s got a nice pressures off before you even get there. So usually
Julia Stallings 16:28
take usually, like, look at the top five, to be honest. Six every now and then depending if one person gets sick or can’t go. super nice. And then you kind
Brady Speth 16:38
of said, so it depends on how many either tournament surveys is not for a set time or is really just set for those like it’s not okay, you’re on team for a year, you’re on the team for two years. Yeah, you’ll
Julia Stallings 16:46
be on the team for quote unquote, a year, okay, I’ll make the travel, quote unquote, a year. And then the next time we have a tournament, it kind of like resets it. So if
Brady Speth 16:54
you say finish six, you’d have a chance again to get the top like, what then what? How long, didn’t make a traveling team.
Julia Stallings 17:01
So just the next tournament, so you’ll go to spring and you’re like, Okay, I didn’t make that traveling team, no problem. Sometimes they’ll put you in a national team, depending on how nationals go if you win nationals or you placed in the top three. And that kind of helps. Like if they need a filler. They’ll be like, Okay, well, she won nationals. She did really, really good here. We might take her somewhere else, or we might put her in an MQS spot. Okay. And then the big one, it would be false selection. That’s where you take pick their team again, they’re like, okay, yeah, pick a new team, or pick that another team for those next events. Right.
Brady Speth 17:31
Um, so travel. It sounds like you, you’re hopefully getting into some of some of the travel bans get lifted. You mentioned something about Italy, I gotta hear this. So I don’t know if it’s something to do with gun related or personal travel. So read this out about being stuck in Italy. So I have some some hilarious travel events that have happened to me with guns and hunting and stuff like that. So let’s hear this one. I got to hear this.
Julia Stallings 17:57
Okay. So I went here, I did not make the traveling team, but I needed more experience. So me and my friends were like, We should go to Italy. This is where it should have been wrong. Like we should have just stopped it from the get go. We’re like we should go shoot this Cup. Okay. So we booked all of our tickets. This is where it first went wrong. We’re not even out of the United States. And we’re in Chicago and we booked our flight. We thought it was AM it was PM. So it was already messed up.
Brady Speth 18:26
Sit in Chicago for 12 hours.
Julia Stallings 18:28
Literally in Chicago for 12 hours. We got a hotel because we’re like, oh my goodness for travel to Iceland in the middle of night. So awesome. So we’d go to Iceland, Iceland our flight gets canceled because of weather. Okay, so we get stuck in Iceland for 24 hours. And we have to sit there because they’re like, Oh, well, if you leave, our flight might come but we don’t know yet when we’re like, so you want to stay in Iceland airport for 24 hours. So it ended up being 24 hours. We get these cards these travel like expense cards, they have a quote unquote $5 to their name. This is their we couldn’t even buy a bottle water and Iceland. So you can already see like, this is not
Brady Speth 19:14
good going downhill every every leg of the trip
Julia Stallings 19:16
and then it gets better. So all of a sudden, everybody’s looking for us. They’re calling our names and we’re like, oh no, let’s go What’s happening? They’re like, we have a gun problem. Okay, so we’re like, oh, crap, this is probably an hour 12 right in the middle of us like in this layover. 24 hour layover are like crap. Okay, so they’re like they’re pointing they take us in this back room literally returning. I even turned my phone camera on because I’m like, this is sketchy. I was like, We’re going in the back of the room. It’s just two girls. Okay, all these hidden doors. And they were like, pointing and pointing and like yelling and we obviously did not understand them whatsoever. They’re like pointing pointing. We’re looking at our guns and we’re like, yeah, they’re fine.
Brady Speth 19:58
They look good. Close ’em back up.
Julia Stallings 20:01
We got to put those on the plane. And so we’re trying to tell him like, Okay, good. We got paperwork. We had permits and everything for Italy. So we’re like, everything should be fine. Yeah. Obviously wasn’t because I guess it was a miscommunication. So they check it off. They put the guns on the plane, we arrive in Italy after this awful layover like 12 hour experiences Chicago, Iceland, the whole nine yards finally get to Italy, the middle of the night. It’s probably like 2:30 in the morning. And we’re like, oh, gosh. So for like, okay, we gotta go check in and you get our paper sign so we can take our guns back home. Yeah, because you gotta get in and out. Right? And you got to keep that paper on you in case like somebody asked like, Oh, hey, do you have guns? And we’re like, oh, paper. Yeah. Well, we are getting there. We’re unloading. And our guns are just in the middle of the baggage claim just sitting there.
Brady Speth 20:49
Julia Stallings 20:50
like, that’s a car in the middle of the baggage claim. There’s nobody monitoring it. And like, I’m like, okay, so we got to go find customs, you know, check in a customs kind of cleared off. There’s no one there for customs. So I was like, we can’t leave this airport. Like
Brady Speth 21:07
isn’t you’re not coming back? Well, they’re
Julia Stallings 21:08
gonna like, Oh, you stole guns. You’re trying to bring them back to America like, Oh, no, I was not about it. There’s no one in this airport. Like, it was like the plane landed and everyone just deserted, disappeared. And wherever you’re like, what happened? Like, what’s going on? Like, no one was there. Like, in less than 10 minutes. We’re like, dude, something’s going down. And so 10 minutes, and we couldn’t find anybody. And so we’re rolling around with our guns in the airport, like, Hey, we need to speak to somebody. We get these military men coming. And they’re like you have guns. confiscated, immediately taken to this police station in the back of the room. They’re yelling at us. And we’re like, oh,
Brady Speth 21:49
Camera phone going on real quick.
Julia Stallings 21:51
Oh, camera phone was on all the time. And then I had Google Translate. And I was like, to show him I was like, please help. And they’re like, why do you have guns? Why are you getting off a plane, like with guns, and we’re over here, like,
Brady Speth 22:04
Julia Stallings 22:04
Five hours later, they’re constantly yelling at us. We have no idea what’s going on. We’re just like, we just need paper sign. Like we’re trying to explain everything. And they’re like, no, trying to sneak in. We’re like, no,
Brady Speth 22:16
that’s why we hung around the airport.
Julia Stallings 22:20
Therefore, like everybody else did. And so no, we have no like on our passwords, we still yet to have the stamp. Like to this day, I’d never had a stamp to go to Italy. And so we’re like, just chill there. Like, middle of police station. Our guns are confiscated. We’re in this lockdown room. And we’re like, I hope we get to talk to somebody in Italy for a while. So finally, the director comes in at like 6am I mean, it’s been a while. Yeah. And he’s like, oh, you’re here for the shooting tournament. signs off after we’ve been yelled at and like, Don’t worry, we’ll get you we’ll get you taken care of. And I’m like, Oh my goodness, we could have gone to Italy jail. We definitely could have done it. Like we could have been locked up. And so me and my friend at this point, we’re like, done, like just sitting there late. Let’s get the car. Yeah, we’re have it up too long. We’ve been to many airports and this entire time, they still have yet to give us the right paperwork. Right. So we still had issues coming back at anyways. And we’re like, we’re never going to Italy again. Not without a team not without other people
Brady Speth 23:25
would like so don’t do this.
Julia Stallings 23:27
We need someone that speaks Italian. Yeah, yeah, so we know that
Brady Speth 23:31
you’re not alone. That’s literally every time I’ve gone to Africa every time I’ve gone anywhere international with guns. It’s Oh, yeah. You have all the paperwork, you have everything and I got handed my gun one time in the jetway and I was in London at Heathrow and I had I was going to AfricaI had my guns in my ammo because leaving here you can put guns and ammo in the same case. Yeah, well, you can in London but you can’t in England you can have that but going into that South Africa you can’t get into separate locked cases. Oh no. So literally, people are getting on the plane behind me in the jetway they like hand me my gun and I’m standing holding my gun looking at the plane and I was like oh something about this is not right? And I was like are you you guys are cool with me just hold my gun right here and I had to like switch guns and ammo and I’m looking everybody’s walking by like just like hold the gun right outside the door of the plane and they were like so crazy about it and then coming home didn’t care they didn’t care and I was like I guess it was just a different guy working like yeah it just yet it’s so hit and miss travel It is so hit and miss.
Julia Stallings 24:33
we went to Korea no problem. They literally we had a little skinny card scanned it got on the plane done. Cool. Italy, different stories.
Brady Speth 24:42
Yeah, I’ve had guns come out on baggage claim, like tons of times. And they were supposed to do I know these are mine. I hope they understand they know that. I know that’s you’re gonna The more you travel International you might be traveling with the national team, but the more you travel international like it’s Yeah. And the rules change, like, oh, you’r the air. You know, you’re like, always supposed to know what happened. Yeah. That’s fun. Well, it’s fun now. It was not always
Julia Stallings 25:16
We always get caught swith shotgun shells. That’s a big one. Yeah. Every time we go through, I’m like, they’re like, do you have any like, anything on you? And we’re like, we don’t even know. You tell me what you see. Like if you see it, it’s probably there. I’m not even gonna deny it. Like, I’m sorry.
Brady Speth 25:33
That’s hilarious. Yeah, that it gets worse. So I’m so competitive shooting obviously. What about hunting? hunting, hunting?
Julia Stallings 25:41
Yeah, so I got into it. It’s actually how I met my boyfriend. He told me a turkeys in the morning and he was like, oh, I’ll be there. Like I was like, dead set on going turkey hunting. I wanted to kill a turkey so bad and he was like, slid into my DMs. Oh, we have turkeys. I was like, Okay, perfect. Let’s go. like five gobblers. I was like, I’ll be there at 5am
Brady Speth 26:03
you better be up
Julia Stallings 26:04
there. And killed me a turkey. I was like, that’s nice.
Brady Speth 26:09
So um, what about so shotgun stuff? Do you do other birds out there?
Julia Stallings 26:13
So duck hunting. So my dad was a big duck hunter growing up where we live in Memphis. So we’re right on that delta line of like Arkansas, Mississippi, Tennessee. And also Yeah, so fun. So fun. So great. Where we can actually just go all the time. Yeah. And so we do. We do a lot. Love duck hunting. favorites. Probably Turkey and I got into deer hunting this year. Okay, that’s
Brady Speth 26:34
I was gonna ask next. Big game.
Julia Stallings 26:46
Deer Hunting is probably the only big game I got. And I want to go elk hunting later, kind of went to Montana. So I kind of was like, Oh my goodness, I gotta go kill it an elk. Yeah. And deer hunting? Yes. We actually bought some land. And we had this field and we’re like, we’re right by the WMA. So it’s like, every all the animals just come over all the time. And I was like, Oh, we should plan a field. Why not? Like, isn’t that what you’re supposed to do it so I learned how to like plant a field drive a tractor, everything whole nine yards. I built a deer stand. And my dad dogged me on this. He was like, Julia, you’ve been working on this deer stand in the middle of season. And I finally got it done. Because you know, I travel. How much time so I finally got it done. It looks all nice. And I’m like, I’m gonna hunt out of it tomorrow morning. And he’s like, Julia, no, like build it. You’re not gonna you’re gonna waste your time. told me that. I was like, well, Dad, I’ll call you if anything. Yeah. 10am rolls around. I give him phone call. I just shoot a nine point like, first first buck first deer ever. And he’s like, he answers. He’s like, What do you want? I was like, Yeah, I killed a deer dad. Like, it’s in the middle of the field. Can you bring like the Ranger. Like, I don’t want to drag this thing is as big as me. So he’s
Brady Speth 27:51
like, start your deer hunting career with something like that.
Julia Stallings 27:54
Like, how in the heck. I just saw it in the field. I was like, is that a buck ever? Like, yeah, I was like, Oh, I should shoot it. Yeah. And he’s like, I can’t believe you.
Brady Speth 28:06
Yeah, that’s beginner’s luck. Yeah, you talk after next season and see how that works out.
Julia Stallings 28:11
So get this. So he goes, like, I’ve been going, I was like, I’m gonna go the next day. I see deer. Now I’m picky. And I was like, Oh, no, I’m picky. So I’ll find the deer that I want to kill. He goes, sees nothing. And he’s like, Julia, there’s no. So I go again. See all the deer and I’m like, Oh, that looks really good. But that’s like a 600 yard shot. I’m not gonna take that on the big deer. Yeah, maybe on a doe. But no big deer. Wait. Yeah. Wait till he comes. It never came. I was like, I’ll come next day. Dad’s like, I’ll go. Nothing.
Brady Speth 28:43
So he’s like, don’t hunt with your dad is what you’re telling
Julia Stallings 28:48
us like what happened?
Brady Speth 28:51
Yeah. Awesome. Yeah. Um, so we were talking. I grew up in Montana. So we’re kind of talking about that ahead of time. elk hunting? Yes. is a must. Yeah, elk hunting in Montana. So yeah, it’s amazing up there. You kind of talked about traveling a little bit International, but also sounds like you kind of road trip and do some other traveling too. So
Julia Stallings 29:12
Oh, yeah. 100%
Brady Speth 29:13
the what? What drove drew to you Montana? You said you just went to a trip there. Yeah.
Julia Stallings 29:17
Yes, I did. And I was watching Yellowstone Not gonna lie. Let’s everyone was like you should watch Yellowstone. You should watch Yellowstone. Well, I was like in full fledged denial. I was like, I’m not watching some ranch movie. Like, it’s not my style. Like, whatever. I watched the first season. Middle the first season. I’m like, we’re going to Montana. Literally booked a trip that next week and I was like, tell gray. I was like, we’re going to Montana next week. Like it’s just gonna happen. He was like, you just started watching this movie. Like, I was like, we gotta go.
Brady Speth 29:49
Julia Stallings 29:50
This is perfect. So we get in a car and no joke drive all the way to Montana. I wanted to go see Glacier in the snow and I had a blast. I fell in love with it. I was like, I’m like on Zillow looking at like houses. I’m like, gives me notifications all the time. I was like, Oh, that looks like a house.
Brady Speth 30:08
Yeah. Yeah. I love it up there. It’s it’s, I don’t love the winters. I like Arizona right now when it’s 70 degrees. But yeah, yeah, that’s the nice part. But yeah, it’s hard to beat the mountains and just the wildlife.
Julia Stallings 30:19
It is eautiful Absolutely. I mean, you see everything, even in the winter. Like, we saw so many animals. I’m like, What do you see in the summer, like, I’m just ready to go the summer now. But so pretty, so gorgeous. Like, can’t beat it. We went coyote hunting, like, you can just drive off the road, go to Wyoming, walk a couple, you know, 100 yards and you’re like, sit behind this hill. Go coyote hunting. Like, this is the life.
Brady Speth 30:44
The open spaces in the public land actually hunt everywhere, which is everywhere.
Julia Stallings 30:48
And they’re they’re there. It’s not like they’re not there. And I’m like, this is awesome.
Brady Speth 30:53
So what else where else are you looking? Obviously, Montana.
Julia Stallings 30:56
I love Montana. trips.
Brady Speth 30:58
I like road trip.
Julia Stallings 31:00
Brady Speth 31:00
it depend on the TV show?
Julia Stallings 31:02
Yeah, I guess it does. If I want to go to Utah. I didn’t get enough time to go to Utah and really wanted to go you know, see those areas. That area was cool. I mean, since I skied, I started skiing when I was four years old. We were always traveling for waterskiing. So I’ve been to a lot of states, but I never got to you know adventure outside of it
Brady Speth 31:20
was not a huge waterskiing state so
Julia Stallings 31:22
we didn’t have a tournament in Idaho. I was like Idaho, and I missed that one. It was the one tournament I missed. I was like, could have gone. I went through Idaho through Montana. Yeah, I was like, a lot of potato fields.
Brady Speth 31:36
Probably alright with that one. Yeah. Sorry if i offended any Idaho fans? Yeah,
I’m from Montana. So I gotta I gotta talk bad about Idaho. So yeah, it’s kind of natural.
Julia Stallings 31:45
Yeah, I will say Montana is just so pretty. so gorgeous. Like you, you just wake up and you’re like, wow, this is nice.
Brady Speth 31:53
It never wears off either. But I still miss it. So we try to go back as many times as we can.
Julia Stallings 31:57
Oh, yeah. I like how you can be in the city. Like, and then 20 minutes later, you can be in the middle of nowhere. Yeah.
Brady Speth 32:03
And you’re like, no one around.
Julia Stallings 32:04
Yeah, you’re like, Oh, this is cool.
Brady Speth 32:06
I grew up like growing up hunting. I was you were by yourself. Like I really do go hunt. And there’s no one around. Here. You go on, you see. And you’re like four different people driving on side by side. Yeah. Like people walking right through like where you have like the best or
Julia Stallings 32:20
the dove hunting where you get like pepper bite?
Brady Speth 32:24
Yeah, yeah. That’s kind of like hunting here. So yeah. Growing up there. So other hobbies What else you got? Obviously shooting.
Julia Stallings 32:33
Brady Speth 32:34
Travel hunting travel.
Julia Stallings 32:38
Well, I used to play basketball. Yeah. almost went to college for basketball dad made a little athlete of all us like me and my brother total just at athlete junkies. We’re in the gym. We’re outside. We’re always doing something. So I did play a little bit of basketball. I do that occasionally. You know, still shoot hoops. I’m five three.
Brady Speth 33:01
Any point guard material?
Julia Stallings 33:05
on the quarter saw me come in literally, they would have to look down. But yeah, so do that. Occasionally. Um, most of the time just outside. I love just adventuring. I love finding new things. And wherever it takes me. I’m like, let’s go for it. Perfect. Yeah. So when I’m not like shooting, or shooting anything else, yeah. Or shooting in the range. I’m outside.
Brady Speth 33:28
We’ll kind of wrap up here. We got a quick fast fire thing to do. What’s next then? So it sounds like is the trip to Egypt on? Or do you not know yet? When? Next is competition wise and calendar?
Julia Stallings 33:39
Yeah. So no one knows about this trip? Because I mean, COVID is taking place a lot of the countries like Australia, UK. There’s a bunch of different ones that just shut down travel. And we don’t know if if we go over there if we can get back. Yeah, so we can go. But we don’t know about coming back.
Brady Speth 33:55
That’d be bad. Does that for a while?
Julia Stallings 33:57
Yeah, the best part like so we’re like we’re talking about Morocco. And we can go to Morocco. Yeah. And they’re like, well, if you get COVID you can’t come back and we’re like, Okay, no problem. So two weeks. Where do we stay? Oh, well, you can’t stay in the hotel. Okay, so where do we stay and they were like you’re homeless in Morocco. I was like, what do we stay in Morocco? Airbnb this? VRBO? Oh, like, trailer, like something. So we have absolutely no idea. It’s just determined on you know, we have like ISSF which is our shooting kind of organization. They got to make a call, like the Olympic people got to make a call like because our Olympic team will be going and we don’t want to put that if they’re still on, you know, at risk, right. And so we want everybody to be safe that comes first and then hopefully, we will go to Egypt, I really hope because I want to shoot in the desert. Right? But that’s just depends. From now we’re having these training camps. Hopefully, hopefully in Tucson. I like the warm weather. So hopefully we stay here
Brady Speth 34:58
from winter and fall. And then find your training camps and yeah, so what else? Yeah,
Julia Stallings 35:03
So look, I’m looking at Montana just because they do have a bunker and I want to like stretch my horizons, you know, venture but we’ll see. We’ll see.
Brady Speth 35:11
Well good luck, obviously keep us posted. We want to see it. Absolutely. And then moving forward to with your career. So good luck with that. We’ll do this one real quick. So this is fun. This is kind of our fast fire questions. So I always laugh cuz everybody gets nervous as soon as I pull this out.
Julia Stallings 35:25
Oh, yeah, you just slipped out of nowhere right here. So
Brady Speth 35:28
we keep it hidden so you don’t get nervous and then it comes out. So just find out we kind of like to have a good time. So it’s first thing you can think of five questions for us kind of answer whatever comes to your mind.
Julia Stallings 35:38
Oh, gosh, pressure. Okay. Okay.
Brady Speth 35:41
If you had one superpower, what would it be? Oh,
Julia Stallings 35:46
to fly. I want to fly.
Brady Speth 35:49
I like oh, yep. Um, if you could have beer with one person. Sit down. Have a drink past present future. who would it be?
Julia Stallings 35:58
Kevin Hart. We’re on the same level on height. And he’s just so funny. He like he can’t
Brady Speth 36:06
he can’t beat that. If you had to eat one food for the rest of your life, what would it be?
Julia Stallings 36:11
Pizza? Everybody who follows me knows I love pizza so much.
Brady Speth 36:17
This will be a good one too. When you write your biography, what would it be? The title?
Julia Stallings 36:24
I don’t know. It’s gonna be something with shooting like something funny. I have no idea on that one. That one.
Brady Speth 36:31
I’ll come back to that one. Okay, I think if I gave you a million dollars right now, what’s the first thing that you would buy?
Julia Stallings 36:38
A lot of guns? Lots of guns.
Brady Speth 36:40
What kind of shotguns
Julia Stallings 36:42
I mean, I would probably deck out like this. What’s on? Like, man cave with like, a bunch of nice, you know? krieghoff shotguns. That’s what I shoot. Yeah, probably have just, every single one of them just different colors in wood. I’m not gonna lie. It’d be like shoes for me. accessorize. Yeah. Be like, Oh, that’s a blonde one that’s more Turkish walnut. I would love it just different kinds. And then have you know the tactical side. And then you know, pistol? Sure, right. Yeah. First thing krieghoff 100% krieghoff
Brady Speth 37:10
Krieghoff gun room. I like it. That’s a good one. All right. Anything on the biography. I’ll let ya if you can. Yeah,
Julia Stallings 37:16
I’ll have a pass. And that is probably something like computing later.
Brady Speth 37:19
Perfect. I like it. Well, thank you for being on. I appreciate it. Good luck. Keep us posted. For sure. Thank you for being a part of the random family and out there and we’re looking forward to it. So good luck. They appreciate it. Thank you.
